On December 14 and 15, Serbia and the EU opened the first two chapters of EU membership negotiations. Serbia became a candidate for EU accession in 2012. Opening negotiations is a major step forward towards eventual membership. Serbian Prime Minister Alexander Vucic (Serbian Progressive Party, SNS) called Monday December 14 a big day for the country. “After opening the first chapters, we will show what kind of society we want to belong to and what we want to build in our country.” Also, Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn called the opening of negotiations “a decisive step towards the EU.” Luxembourg is currently holding the presidency of the EU. However, experts have already emphasised that it will be a long road towards Serbian EU membership.
